Don't know why Tillamook Rock Lighthouse is so far away from Tillamook! It's 10 miles west of Tillamook. This would be pretty lonely duty.

The Peter Iredale, 278 feet from stem to stern, fashioned of steel plates on iron frames. The ship went aground on Clatsop Beach in 1906. After 105 years of wind, sand and surf it's amazing that anything remains. Tides and sand movement determine how much of the ship you can see.

Driving around Astoria looking at the Victorian houses we spotted this deer, along with two others, munching on plants in front of this home.

Over on the Washington side of the Columbia River this is North Head Lighthouse.

The North Head lighthouse was completed and went into service in 1898.

Cape Disappointment Lighthouse at the mouth of the Columbia River in Washington State. The Cape was named "Disappointment" by Captain John Meares who had expected to find a good harbor just beyond it. He was disappointed to find rocky shoals instead, and turned back...never discovering the mighty river on the other side of the shoals. Later, Lewis and Clark finished their 2,000 mile trek to the coast and celebrated their journey's end at Cape Disappointment.

The Astoria Column has served for over 80 years as a beacon on the Pacific Northwest Coast. It sits in a wooded area 600 feet above sea level on Coxcomb Hill, Astoria, Oregon's highest point. You can climb the 162 step circular staircase for a view from the top. But I was tired and didn't do it!

Great view of the Astoria-Megler Bridge, which stretches 4.1 miles from Astoria, Oregon, across the mouth of the Columbia River, to Point Ellice, Washington. Its construction was an impressive feat. The bridge's main span is 1,232 feet in length, the longest "continuous truss" in the nation.

Still lots of snow in September.
